Get UNCOMFORTABLE at the IEP Table

Special Needs Parents and Teachers, It's often necessary to make others uncomfortable at the IEP table. Do it anyway. In fact, if you're feeling uncomfortable, you're probably doing everything RIGHT!

Changing IEP goals can be uncomfortable.
Discussing placements can be uncomfortable.
Giving updated data can be uncomfortable.

Telling people what they don't want to hear is just simply uncomfortable.

But, if you are speaking from facts, not feelings. And you are being truthful with compassion. You need to do what's right for your child or student at the IEP table.

Every. Time.

Even when it's uncomfortable.

I’ve sat at the IEP table as a teacher, wondering if I can say what I really want to say and not get a pink slip delivered in my mailbox on Friday.

I’ve sat at the IEP table, supporting parents, watching teachers squirm. I could see that look on their face. The internal struggle that I experienced so many years ago.

We’re 45 years into Special Education being mandated in all states. An appropriate education for every child should be happening everywhere. Yet, IEP teams are still struggling like this process is brand new.

Special Education Teachers went to school to master how to teach children with different abilities. They work the long hours and care with all their heart, but at some point, they will hit a crossroads…

Do I speak up or do I keep my job?

This shouldn’t be a choice they have to make.

Our Special Education system can do better.

You can be part of the solution.
